Artuklu Dönemi mimari örneklerinden, dilimli kubbesi ve minaresiyle Mardin’in sembolü olan Mardin Ulu Cami kayıtlara göre iki minareli inşa edilmiştir. Caminin bugün mevcut olan tek minaresinin kare kaidesindeki yazıt, yapım tarihini 1176 olarak vermektedir, fakat bugünkü minare 1888/1889 yıllarında yeni ve elektik bir üslupla yapılmıştır. Bazı Süryani yazarlar kiliseden çevrildiğini söylerler. Ara Altun'un (1) yaptığı araştırmaya göre ise yapının bugünkü verilerine bakarak bu yorumu yapmak imkansızdır. Cami 12'nci yüzyıl Artuklu Dönemi mimarisinin temel özelliklerini yansıtır.  Caminin yapısı, aynı zamanda, çevredeki birçok yapı tarafından taklit edilmiş bir modeldir. Cami ibadete açıktır.

ENGLISH,ULU MOSQUE

Mardin Ulu Mosque, one of the architectural examples of the Artuqid Period, is the symbol of Mardin with its slice shape dome and minaret. According to the records, initially it was built with two minarets. The inscription on the only existing minaret of the mosque points the date of construction as 1176, but today's minaret was built in 1888/1889 in a contemperary style. Some Syriac writers claim that the mosque was converted from the church. However,according to Ara Altun's(1) research, it is impossible to reach this conclusion, by looking at the current data of the building. The mosque reflects the basic features of the 12th century Artuqid period architecture. The structure of the mosque is also a model that has been imitated by many surrounding structures.Ulu Mosque still serves as a temple today. For the non-muslim visitors (In case you're not aware of traditions) we kindly advise to take off your shoes at the entrance of the temple and cover your head (for women) while visiting the mosque out of the common prayer hours.

La Mezquita Mardin Ulu, uno de los ejemplos arquitectónicos del Período Artuqid, es el símbolo de Mardin con su cúpula y minarete en forma de rebanada. Según los registros, inicialmente se construyó con dos minaretes. La inscripción en el único minarete existente de la mezquita señala la fecha de construcción en 1176, pero el minarete actual fue construido en 1888/1889 en un estilo contemporáneo. Algunos escritores siríacos afirman que la mezquita se convirtió de la iglesia. La mezquita refleja las características básicas de la arquitectura del período Artuqid del siglo XII. La estructura de la mezquita también es un modelo que ha sido imitado por muchas estructuras circundantes. La mezquita de Ulu todavía sirve como templo en la actualidad. Para los visitantes no musulmanes (en caso de que no esté al tanto de las tradiciones), le recomendamos quitarse los zapatos en la entrada del templo y cubrirse la cabeza (para mujeres) mientras visita la mezquita fuera de las horas comunes de oración.


АНГЛИЙСКИЙ, МЕЧЕТЬ УЛУ

Мечеть Мардин-Улу, один из архитектурных образцов периода Артукидов, является символом Мардина с куполом и минаретом в форме среза. Согласно записям, изначально он был построен с двумя минаретами. Надпись на единственном существующем минарете мечети указывает на дату постройки 1176 года, но сегодняшний минарет был построен в 1888/1889 годах в современном стиле. Некоторые сирийские писатели утверждают, что мечеть была преобразована из церкви. Однако, согласно исследованию Ара Алтуна(1), невозможно прийти к такому выводу, глядя на текущие данные по зданию. Мечеть отражает основные черты архитектуры периода Артукидов XII века. Структура мечети также является образцом, которому подражали многие окружающие постройки. Мечеть Улу до сих пор служит храмом. Посетителям-немусульманам (если вы не знакомы с традициями) советуем снимать обувь при входе в храм и покрывать голову (женщинам) при посещении мечети вне общих молитвенных часов.
